UPSC Syllabus Explained
Every note, newspaper cutting and mock should tag to a syllabus line. If it cannot be tagged, it is optional reading.

In short: The UPSC Civil Services syllabus is the outline in the Commission’s notification: Prelims GS Paper I plus qualifying CSAT, then Mains qualifying languages, Essay, GS I–IV and Optional Paper I & II, then the Personality Test. This page explains that outline. The legal text is only the latest official PDF on upsc.gov.in.
What Prelims actually tests
GS Paper I covers current events, Indian history and the national movement, Indian and world geography, polity and governance, economic and social development, environment and ecology, and general science. CSAT Paper II covers comprehension, interpersonal skills, logical reasoning, decision-making, numeracy and data interpretation. Both sit on the notified Prelims day.
GS I–IV in one line each
- GS-I — Indian heritage, history, society, world history themes, geography
- GS-II — Constitution, polity, governance, social justice, international relations
- GS-III — economy, agriculture, science and tech, environment, disaster management, internal security
- GS-IV — ethics, integrity, aptitude, and case studies

How to use the syllabus every week
Keep a one-page map. When you read a newspaper, write the GS paper number in the margin or skip the story. When you finish a PYQ, mark the syllabus heading it belonged to. That map is more useful than a 40-book pile.
FAQs
Is this page the official UPSC syllabus PDF?
No. It is an explainer. Download and read the syllabus annex in the latest Civil Services Examination notification on upsc.gov.in whenever you start a new cycle.
Does the syllabus change every year?
The broad CSE structure has been stable, but wording and instructions can change in a new notification. Never prepare from a screenshot of an old PDF.
Should I finish the whole syllabus before PYQs?
No. Use PYQs while you cover a heading so you see depth and repetition. Waiting for a “full syllabus” finish is how candidates miss the exam year.
Where do I see the exam calendar?
Only on upsc.gov.in (Annual Calendar and the CSE notification). This site does not publish a substitute calendar.
